Nearly four dozen emaciated, flea-infested dogs are being removed from a Spencer County farm.

The seizure of the animals began as a voluntary surrender of a few dogs, Spencer County Animal Control told WAVE.com, but the condition of the animals resulted in the ongoing seizure of 45 dogs.

As of Thursday, 30 dogs and five cats have been seized with as many as 15 additional dogs still on the property.

“We started trapping, the numbers just kept going,” Spencer County Animal Control told WAVE.com. “As we would trap, more dogs that were not seen on the property would be coming out of the woods to the traps.”

The seized dogs range in age from as old as 14 to as young as a few weeks.

“These dogs are emaciated, they’re flea-ridden, they’re anemic, they can’t walk three feet without scratching themselves,” Julie Foley, with Lost Dog Search and Trapping, told the Louisville television station. “They’re just so heavily flea infested. We’re covered in fleas just being on the property.”
