A vehicle being struck by a bullet caused a school district to be placed on lockdown and students kept inside school buildings after school.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 2:00 when a vehicle was struck by a bullet where KY 15 intersects with the Hal Rogers Parkway (Exit 59), approximately one mile from Perry County Central High School.

The driver initially thought a rock had struck his windshield, according to WYMT.com. But when the driver arrived at his home, he found a bullet lodged in the base of the windshield. The window did not shatter.

The Perry County Sheriff’s Office, while assisting the Hazard Police Department, utilized a drone with thermal imaging capabilities “to help detect persons in wooded areas,” according to the sheriff’s office. No one was located.

When the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and Hazard Police Department were notified about the incident, schools in the area were alerted and placed on lockdown, including Perry County Central High School, East Perry Elementary and West Perry Elementary.

The school district received an all clear from law enforcement just after 4:00 p.m., according to the school district. A short time later, buses were allowed to pick up and deliver students to their homes under the supervision of the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.

The Hazard Police Department is leading the investigation.

The shooting took place about 60 miles east of London, where police continue to search for 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch, of Woodbine, who’s accused of firing into 12 vehicles and shooting five people on Saturday with an AR-15 as he was perched above I-75 on a rocky ledge.
