A teenage volunteer firefighter has died in a house fire in Spencer County.

The Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District said firefighters and other first responders were dispatched to a residential fire at 1046 Bloomfield Road, approximately one mile south of Taylorsville, Saturday morning at about 1:00.

Eight people were initially trapped inside the home, according to a report by WHAS11.com, but when firefighters arrived only 18-year-old James Lee Nation, of Taylorsville, remained in the residence as heavy smoke and flames emanated from the structure.

As firefighters made their way into the home, they located Nation deceased.

Nation, the fire department said, was a former member of the Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District Jr. Firefighters Program. His obituary said he was a “volunteer firefighter in Spencer County.”

It’s unclear how the fire started. The investigation is ongoing.
