A man has been arrested after killing a dog before kicking in a front door and shooting a man and nearly shooting a small child.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office responded Saturday morning just after midnight to the report of a shooting at a residence on Wagers Road, about seven miles southeast of London, according to Sheriff John Root.

The investigation showed that 26-year-old Joseph Collett, of Gray, shot and killed a dog on the home’s front porch before kicking in the front door. Collett, once inside, shot a 38-year-old man in the leg “and fired numerous other rounds inside the residence narrowly missing a four-year-old male child in the residence,” Root said.

Another child was in the home but in a different room.

Collett then exited the home, Root stated, and shot “numerous rounds into the residence” before fleeing the scene.

Collett was arrested a few hours later by Knox County deputies “who were familiar with the accused …,” Root said. The suspect was transported back to Laurel County and lodged in Laurel County Corrections where he was charged with attempted murder, first-degree burglary, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, and second-degree cruelty to animals.

He is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
