The man convicted of killing a London police officer in a DUI crash has been sentenced.

Casey P. Byrd, 38, of Oneida, Tennessee, was convicted after driving drunk following a party and t-boning London Police Officer Logan K. Medlock, 26, of Keavy, during the early morning hours of October 30, 2022.

Byrd was found guilty earlier his month of murder, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief and DUI.

He was sentenced on Monday to 20 years in prison, the least harsh sentence available.

As K105 previously reported, the crash occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. at an intersection as Byrd was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram truck north on Hwy 229 (Barbourville Rd.) and struck Medlock’s southbound 2019 Dodge Charger as the officer drove on South Main Street in London, according to Kentucky State Police.

Medlock died at the scene.

Medlock joined the London Police Department in August 2019 after spending approximately 18 months working at Laurel County Corrections, state police said. He was the son of London PD Assistant Chief Randy Medlock.

“Logan was an outstanding police officer. We are heartbroken. I want to thank KSP and the sheriff’s office for stepping up and helping us at this time,” London Police Chief Travis Dotson said in an emotional statement only hours after the crash, adding that the department is in “a horrible time of shock and disbelief. It’s a great loss for this community, and we will never forget.”

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team investigated the crash.
