Firefighters and other first responders spend many hours per year participating in continuing education intended to teach new techniques and hone existing skills.

On Thursday night, fire departments from around the county, EMS, Grayson Co. Emergency Management (GCEM), Kentucky National Guard, Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center, and Clarkson Police Department participated in a hazardous materials decontamination exercise.

This was a scenario-based exercise, held in the parking lot of the Grayson Co. VA Clinic in Clarkson, where a fictional hazardous material spill of organic peroxide contaminated several patients.

“These ‘contaminated patients’ were sent through an on-scene immediate decontamination then transported via Grayson County EMS and Kentucky National Guard to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for further evaluation, decontamination, and treatment,” GCEM said.

Fire departments from Leitchfield, Clarkson, Caneyville, Anneta, Falls of Rough, Wax, and East Grayson participated in the exercise.

The Grayson County Coroner’s Office and Grayson County High School HOSA also took part in the training.
