The man who holds the single-game college basketball scoring record has died at age 91.

Frank Selvy, known as the “Corbin Comet,” died at his home in South Carolina on Tuesday.

Selvy played high school basketball at Corbin High School in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. He matriculated to Furman University where he starred from 1952-1954, spurning offers from UK’s Adolph Rupp and WKU’s E.A. Diddle. He was a three-time All-America selection and two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year.

In 78 career games at Furman, Selvy averaged 32.5 points per game. He led the nation in scoring for two seasons culminating in a 41.7 points per game average his senior year.

The 6-foot guard still holds the D-I NCAA single-game scoring record with 100 points in a game against Newberry College in February 1954.

Selvy was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets with the No. 1 pick in the 1954 NBA Draft. He played nine seasons in the NBA, averaging 10.8 points per contest.

Following his NBA career, Selvy was hired by Furman as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach from 1966-1970.
