A Lancaster man has been arrested after police found dozens of dogs “in extremely deplorable conditions” and animal remains inside a residence, according to the Garrard County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said deputies served a search warrant at a home on Royalty Drive in Lancaster. Upon entering the residence, police discovered “over 80 dogs living inside the home in extremely deplorable conditions” in addition to “animal remains … in a decayed state.”

The residence was deemed uninhabitable due to health and safety concerns, the sheriff’s office said.

The homeowner and suspect, 64-year-old Dennis Kirkpatrick, was charged with 62 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals, torture of a dog or cat (a class D felony) and harboring a vicious animal.

He was lodged in the Jessamine County Detention Center on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

The dogs were turned over to Garrard County Animal Control.
