The trial of a man accused of killing a London police officer in a DUI crash in October 2022 is underway in Bowling Green.
Casey P. Byrd, 38, of Oneida, Tennessee, is on trial after he allegedly drove drunk following a party and t-boned London Police Officer Logan K. Medlock, 26, of Keavy, during the early morning hours of October 30, 2022.
The trial, which began on Tuesday, was moved from Laurel County to Warren County at the request of the defense.
Medlock died at the scene.
Byrd is on trial for murder and DUI (aggravated circumstances).
According to a report by WBKO.com on the first day of the trial: “Witnesses recalled sampling at least three or four bottles of bourbon with Byrd the night of the crash.”
The homeowner who hosted the party, comprised of coworkers watching a football game, said he thought Byrd was planning to stay the night. The homeowner further said he wasn’t aware Byrd had left the home until the morning following the crash.
Medlock joined the London Police Department in August 2019 after spending approximately 18 months working at Laurel County Corrections, state police said. He was the son of London PD Assistant Chief Randy Medlock.
“Logan was an outstanding police officer. We are heartbroken. I want to thank KSP and the sheriff’s office for stepping up and helping us at this time,” London Police Chief Travis Dotson said in an emotional statement only hours after the crash, adding that the department is in “a horrible time of shock and disbelief. It’s a great loss for this community, and we will never forget.”
The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team investigated the crash.
