The man who has supported the local community through his unrelenting, decades-long dedication to Grayson County High School athletics is now in need of support and compassion.

E.E. “Mr. Spirit” McGhee, 87, who has battled multiple illnesses over the last few years, including combating cancer and the loss of his wife, “is recovering from some health issues …” according to Grayson County High School 50th Anniversary’s Facebook post earlier this week.

The entire post reads as follows:

“As many of you know, Mr. McGhee is recovering from some health issues and could use some cheering up from the community that he loves so much. We would like to ask that everyone who has been touched by Mr. Spirit sometime along the way to send him a card and some works of encouragement to this address:

The photos in this story are perfect examples of how important the boys and girls of Grayson County High School are to Mr. Spirit, as his joy jumps through the camera lens while he cuts down the net after the Cougars won the 12th District championship at Butler County on February 25, 2022.

“Nobody was more excited about Grayson County winning the district championship tonight than Mr. Spirit!,” Sam Gormley, the Cougars’ play-by-play announcer, said. “The team made sure he got the chance to cut down part of the net. No one better!”
