New details have surfaced in a shooting that occurred Wednesday night on Claggett Road.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Kentucky State Police, arrested 58-year-old Guy M. Schmitzerle, of Leitchfield, and charged him with attempted murder (domestic violence) after he shot at a female who was in a vehicle.

The victim told police she “escaped” from Schmitzerle during a domestic altercation where the suspect “was having a mental break thinking he was Jesus, etc.,” the citation states. She further stated that she felt Schmitzerle was a “threat” to her and a juvenile.

When the victim “escaped” the residence and entered her vehicle, Schmitzerle “came outside and used a sawed off (sic) shotgun to shoot at her in an attempt to kill her,” the citation states.

The victim arrived at the Leitchfield Police Department at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday in a passenger car that had “buckshot damage to the driver’s side window and door.” She advised police, according to the citation, that Schmitzerle “had numerous weapons and was taking them out and lining them up.”

Leitchfield police then alerted other law enforcement units that a shooting had taken place on Claggett Road. Kentucky State Police troopers were in the area and arrived at the home and summoned Schmitzerle to come outside where he was detained.

Law enforcement also discovered that, as the victim had stated, Schmitzerle had many weapons readied throughout the home.

Once in custody, the suspect “gave a voluntary statement that he had shot (the female’s) car as she described,” according to the citation. When Schmitzerle spoke with Grayson County Sgt. Erik Franklin after being mirandized, the suspect told Franklin “that he may have killed her.”

He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

Grayson County Deputies Caleb Owens and Hunter Miller assisted at the scene.

As K105 reported at the time of the arrest, Schmitzerle was jailed on October 3, 2020, after police found thousands of dollars’ worth of marijuana on his property.

He was arrested two other times in October 2020, according to online records, where he faced charges including, fourth-degree assault (domestic violence), first-degree disorderly conduct, third-degree criminal mischief, menacing, and second-degree disorderly conduct.
