The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a tree line on Salt River Road (Hwy 920).

Grayson County Deputy Erik Franklin, the Leitchfield Fire Department and EMS responded to the single-vehicle accident, with entrapment, Tuesday evening at approximately 7:20 in the 2100 block of Salt River Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a 46-year-old male trapped inside a Ford Explorer after the vehicle sustained heavy damage after striking a tree. Firefighters were able to extricate the man from the crumpled SUV within minutes of arriving on scene.

The male was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center.

According to marks at the scene, the Ford was traveling east on Salt River Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the opposite lane of travel, nearly driving off the westbound side of road and into a culvert. The vehicle, though, veered hard right and exited the eastbound side of the road and traveled down a short embankment before striking multiple trees and coming to rest in a tree line.

The driver, from Eastview, but with ties to Grayson County, had the distinctive smell of alcohol on his breath, according to first responders.

The accident investigation, according to the sheriff’s office, is ongoing.
