Leitchfield could be in line for a new wastewater treatment plant twice as large as the current plant on Commerce Drive.
At a special-called meeting of the Leitchfield City Council on Monday afternoon, Utilities Superintendent Dwight Embry requested the council approve a resolution allowing Embry to explore the possibility of building a new wastewater treatment plant on the site of the current plant at 218 Commerce Drive.
Embry told the council that the resolution is only the first step of many to making the new plant a reality. County government must also approve the resolution before a plan is presented to the state for its approval.
The plans include acreage for possible future expansion, as the Kentucky Division of Water is considering transitioning to regional wastewater treatment facilities.
The council unanimously approved the resolution.
If the remainder of the approval process goes smoothly, it’s possible construction could start within a year, according to Embry. Construction would take approximately two-and-a-half years, Embry stated.
The money for a new plant would likely come from grants and possibly state and/or federal funding.
