A sergeant paramedic with Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS (AMFE) has drowned at Barren River Lake.

Christian Smith, 35, of Louisville, drowned Monday afternoon while swimming, according to AMFE.

Kentucky Fish & Wildlife personnel told WBKO that witnesses said Smith “jumped off the back of a boat and never resurfaced.”

He was not wearing a life jacket.

AMFE issued the following statement on social media regarding Smith’s death:

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Sergeant Christian Smith. Today, Christian tragically drowned while swimming at Barren River Lake.

As we navigate this difficult time with limited information, we recognize the profound impact this loss will have on Christian’s family, his crew, and our entire department. Sgt Smith was 35 years old and has been with the department since 2014.

The days and weeks ahead will be challenging, but it is crucial that we stand united as a department. Updates will be provided as we gather more information.

Our hearts are with his family.
