A human skull found near the residence of a missing 21-year-old Monroe County woman has been confirmed as being the missing woman.
Kentucky State Police confirmed to WBKO.com that the remains found in October near Blankenship Road in the Bugtussle area of Monroe County are those of 20-year-old Katie M. Cawthorn, of Fountain Run. She disappeared after leaving her residence following a disagreement on October 1, 2019.
“She left home after an argument, intending to go through a soybean field to a creek three miles away. She took a small packed bag and left on foot without her cellular phone. She has never been heard from again …,” according to the Charley Project, an organization that serves as a database for persons missing at least one year.
The remains were discovered in November 2023 about 200 yards from Cawthorn’s home. Her cause of death has not yet been determined.
Kentucky State Police is leading the death investigation.
