An elderly Elizabethtown woman has perished in a residential fire.

The fire occurred Monday night at approximately 7:50 at a home on Gayle Drive, according to The News-Enterprise. Gayle Drive is about two miles east of Elizabethtown off Bardstown Road (Hwy 62).

A neighbor told the Elizabethtown newspaper that he was working in his garage when he heard a loud popping sound. He then saw heavy smoke coming from the home.

The Central Hardin and Valley Creek Fire Departments responded to the blaze and, after extinguishing the fire at approximately 9:00 p.m., located the body of 75-year-old Brenda “Barbara” Stewart inside the home.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The neighbor, who said he attempted to enter the residence with a fire extinguisher prior to firefighters arriving but was turned away by the extreme heat and dense smoke, noted that Stewart rarely left her home.
