An intoxicated driver has been charged with vehicular homicide after crashing into a vehicle at 150 miles per hour while fleeing police.

According to Kentucky State Police, a trooper clocked a BMW traveling at 132 miles per hour near the 148-mile marker of northbound I-75 in Grant County. The trooper activated his lights and siren but the vehicle, being driven by 47-year-old Jody L. Miller, of Cincinnati, Ohio, sped up to 153 miles per hour.

The trooper lost sight of the BMW but soon arrived at a wreck scene where the BMW had crashed into the rear of a KIA passenger car near the 153-mile marker, state police said. Upon impact, the KIA burst into flames.

The driver and passenger of the KIA were pronounced deceased at the scene. The Grant County Coroner’s Office told news outlets that 32-year-old Joshua Turza, of Avon, Ohio, and his girlfriend, 30-year-old Meagan Spurgeon, of North Olmsted, Ohio, were killed in the crash.

Miller had to be extricated from his vehicle. Authorities, according to multiple reports, said the trooper “could smell the odor of alcoholic beverages coming from his person.”

Miller was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide when under the influence of alcohol, DUI (aggravating circumstances, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), and speeding 26 miles per hour over the limit.

He is lodged in the Grant County Detention Center on a $1 million cash bond.
