An Elizabethtown man has been indicted after accidentally shooting a teenager in the head while making a video.

The Elizabethtown Police Department was dispatched Saturday night, April 27, 2024, at approximately 9:30 to the shooting at Ashley Pointe Apartments in the 600 block of Stewart Street, according to The News-Enterprise.

The investigation showed that multiple people had been pointing firearms at each other while filming a video when 20-year-old Joseph Hampton-Roberts pointed a gun at a 16-year-old and pulled the trigger, shooting the teen in the head. The victim was airlifted to a Louisville hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

Hampton-Roberts told police he removed the clip from the gun before pulling the trigger, the Elizabethtown newspaper reports. The firearm involved in the shooting was found to be stolen, as well.

Hampton-Roberts was recently indicted by a Hardin County Grand Jury for first-degree assault, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property (firearm), possession of a controlled substance, second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Also indicted in the case was 20-year-old Devin Omar Buchanon, of Elizabethtown. He was indicted for first-degree wanton endangerment (for pointing a firearm at Hampton-Roberts during the incident), second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor, receiving stolen property (firearm), tampering with physical evidence, and possession of marijuana.

Buchanon has not yet been arrested. Hampton-Roberts is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.

“The shooting was not intentional, but again, their behavior was extremely reckless,” Elizabethtown PD spokesman Chris Denham told The News-Enterprise.
