A man has been arrested after assaulting three Falls of Rough firemen and two Grayson County deputies.

On Monday afternoon at approximately 1:30, two Falls of Rough firemen and Fire Chief David Mercer responded to Autumn Ridge Road after a man began experiencing heart issues.

The firemen met a vehicle containing the patient and began to render aid when 28-year-old Caleb Reynolds, of Bee Spring, a friend or relative of the man suffering the medical emergency, began physically and verbally attacking the firefighters.

“The guy was just terribly drunk and wanted to fight the boys treating the patient,” Mercer said.

The chief said he told Reynolds, “You need to step back and let us treat this man.”

Reynolds then turned his attention to Mercer and attempted to punch him. Mercer avoided the punch and “took Reynolds to the ground.”

Mercer said he held him down until Grayson County deputies arrived on the scene several minutes later, telling Reynolds, “You better hope he (the patient) doesn’t die.”

A juvenile firefighter suffered a minor injury in the altercation, as did Mercer.

Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jordan Jones and Deputy Caleb Owens then arrived and arrested Reynolds. He was transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for evaluation and, once at the hospital, he kicked both deputies and punched Jones in the chest, according to Sheriff Norman Chaffins.

Reynolds was charged with five counts of felony assault, terroristic threatening, disorderly conduct, and alcohol intoxication in a public place. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

The patient was airlifted to a Louisville hospital.
