A violent thunderstorm rolled through Grayson County beginning at approximately 10:30 Sunday morning leaving behind a trail of destruction.
The Foxborough subdivision off Clifty Church Road suffered severe devastation as multiple homes were impacted by strong straight-line winds, which downed and/or uprooted several large trees.
On Foxborough Drive, what appeared to be a 40- to 50-foot-long travel trailer was tossed into the side of a residence. At the same location, a three-car garage was destroyed. The roof of the home was partially peeled away.
Several other homes in the subdivision lost large portions of their roofs, as well, with multiple homes struck by falling trees and/or large branches.
On Clifty Church Road, at the intersection of Foxborough Drive, all that remains of an outbuilding located adjacent to a residence are pieces of wood strewn over a large area.
On Center Street in Clarkson, a tree fell on a house. Luckily, though, according to Caneyville Fire Chief Brian Pharris, the home did not suffer structural damage.
Blue Creek Drive in Caneyville was blocked by a large tree that fell across the roadway. Pharris added that his department responded to four trees down on Hopewell Road; two down on Windy Ridge Road; three on Beaver Dam Road; and one each on Yeaman Road and Pine Knob Road.
Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said his department responded to approximately 10 locations where downed trees blocked roadways. Duvall said most of the calls were on the outskirts of Leitchfield.
The Clarkson and East Grayson Fire Departments responded to trees over the roadway at several locations, including Antioch Church Road and Summit Road. On Elmore Lane, off Omer Drive, a huge tree and power lines fell on top of two vehicles.
The Falls of Rough Fire Department assisted the state Highway Department after nearly 10 downed trees blocked several roadways, including Owensboro Road, Cave Creek Road and Olaton Road, Fire Chief David Mercer said.
At its peak, nearly 1,000 Grayson County customers were without power. As of 3:15 Sunday afternoon, nearly 900 customers remained without power.
Another strong storm system is forecast to arrive in the county late Sunday night or early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Shelter open
Grayson County Emergency Management has opened a shelter at the old courthouse building on the Leitchfield Public Square. Enter the basement of the building through the door on the east side of the courthouse (Alexander Hotel, The Cecilian Bank side).
