Explosion followed by fire claims lives of father, son

An explosion followed by a devasting fire killed a father and son in a small eastern Kentucky town.

The incident happened Sunday morning at approximately 9:30 on Henry Hutton Road in Fleming Neon, a town of about 800 residents in Letcher County.

Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler told WYMT.com that the victims, a father and his son, were 77-years-old and 32-years-old respectively.

Neighbors told police a large explosion preceded the fire, which quickly spread throughout the small structure. One neighbor attempted to enter the burning residence, but the back door wouldn’t open and a window in the back of the residence was blocked, according to WYMT.com.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Authorities at this point are unsure what caused the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
