The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and “Behind the Badge” have awarded $1,000 scholarships to 15 graduating Grayson County High School students.
“As many of you know, we have started a non-profit called ‘Behind the Badge.’ In the past, we have awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior,” Sheriff Norman Chaffins said in a social media post.
There were 15 applicants this year. The application process, Chaffins said, includes a 500-word essay written by the applicant “on the importance of doing for others and having a positive attitude.”
The essays, according to Chaffins, were so impressive that he couldn’t pick one scholarship winner.
“In the process of choosing the winner, I would read an essay and either put it in the ‘possibly winning pile’ or the ‘runner up’ pile. After I read all 15 essays, I realized that all of the essays were in the ‘possibly winning pile,’” Chaffins said.
So the sheriff, incredibly impressed with each essay, chose to award $1,000 scholarships to all 15 applicants.
The sheriff’s office was allowed to be so generous due to the generosity of Grayson County residents.
“Our organization has been so blessed to live in an area where people have such giving hearts!” Chaffins wrote. “And we are super pumped that we were able to award these fine young men and women this scholarship! Thank you Grayson County!!! This is just one of the many endeavors in which your donation contributes! Make us proud recipients!”
“Behind the Badge” is funded by donations from our Grayson County citizens and our big donor, Nolin Raft Up, Chaffins added.
