Grayson County Emergency Management (GCEM) is warning residents of the possibility of severe weather impacting the region.

“Multiple rounds of storms are expected for our area. Your Grayson Co. EM office has sat in on multiple meetings today concerning the weather … We will be actively monitoring the situation as it unfolds,” GCEM Director Carey Sims said in a social media post.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center “has moved our area to an enhanced risk for severe weather” on Tuesday night, Sims said, with the “window for severe weather” lasting until 2:00 a.m. Wednesday.

“Now this doesn’t necessarily mean (specifically) for Grayson County, but for our region. We could see winds up to 70 mph with some golf ball sized hail,” according to Sims. “Again, this is in our region. It’s difficult to put a pinpoint on an area.”

On Wednesday, the window for severe weather is, as of early Tuesday evening, between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Nearly the entirety of Kentucky is under an enhanced risk of severe weather, including tornadoes, hail, high winds, and heavy rainfall.

“Depending on the instability of today (Tuesday), will dictate how severe the weather could be for tomorrow,” Sims stated.

Sims added that the old courthouse at 10 Public Square in Leitchfield will be open as a storm shelter Tuesday and Wednesday.
