A Barren County man has been arrested after a standoff at a storage facility.

The Glasgow Police Department was dispatched to Storage Sense, a storage facility at 908 Happy Valley Road, Tuesday morning at 9:15 on the report of a man with a gun.

When officers arrived on scene, a female ran out of the Storage Sense building, as police observed a male inside the office holding a firearm, according to Glasgow PD Public Information Officer, Major Terry Flatt.

The male, later identified as 44-year-old Christopher L. Safford, of Glasgow, was given verbal commands to drop the weapon and exit the building, but he refused to comply.

Officers attempted to negotiate with Safford before the Barren County Tactical Team entered the building and took the suspect into custody.

The firearm Safford had in his possession was discovered to be stolen, Flatt said.

The suspect was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property (firearm) and first-degree wanton Endangerment. He was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center.

Glasgow police were assisted by the Barren County Sheriff’s Office.

Safford was convicted multiple times on several felony charges between 1998 and 2011, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, including convictions for first-degree robbery, second- and third-degree burglary and theft by unlawful taking (twice). All of his convictions occurred in Christian County.
