A young woman has been killed in an ATV crash where the allegedly intoxicated male driver was charged with vehicular homicide.
Kentucky State Police said that on Saturday night at approximately 11:15, troopers responded to the fatal crash on Highland Drive in Jackson in Breathitt County.
The preliminary investigation indicated that 23-year-old Logan Spencer, of Lexington, was driving an ATV on Highland Drive when he lost control, causing the vehicle to “overturn over an embankment,” state police said.
Alexis Smith, 22, of Lexington, Spencer’s girlfriend and a passenger on the ATV, was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Breathitt County Coroner’s Office.
During the investigation, state police said troopers “detected indicators of impairment from the operator.” The suspect’s blood-alcohol level was measured at .114 percent, above the .08 percent allowed in Kentucky to operate a motor vehicle.
Spencer was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and DUI. He was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail.
Toxicology results are pending, state police said, and seat belts were not in use at the time of the crash.
