An Indiana man has been charged for his role in a crash on the Clark Memorial Bridge (aka Second Street Bridge) that propelled a tractor-trailer through the bridge’s railing, causing it to dangle precariously over the Ohio River.

Trevor Branham, 33, of Jeffersonville, was charged with four counts of felony wanton endangerment and driving on a suspended license, according to WAVE.com.

The charges arose after witnesses told law enforcement that Branham, who was driving a pickup truck, was speeding and weaving through traffic when he struck a stalled vehicle. He then lost control of his truck and entered the opposite lane of travel where Branham’s truck struck the semi, WAVE.com reports.

The female driver of the Sysco-owned semi, who was not injured, was rescued by 29-year-old Louisville firefighter Bryce Carden, who repelled down to the cab of the dangling semi, cut the driver out of her seatbelt and placed her into a harness.

The bridge, in the middle of the channel, is approximately 73-feet above the Ohio River when the river is at “pool” stage (normal level).

The 5,700-foot span connects Louisville and Jeffersonville. The bridge opened on October 31, 1929.
