At least one tornado touched down in multiple northwestern Kentucky counties Thursday afternoon causing widespread damage.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said an EF-1 twister touched down in Milton, a town of fewer than 600 residents in Trimble County. NWS damage surveyors continue to evaluate damage in the area, but early reports indicate an EF-2 tornado may have touched down just east of Milton (it’s not known yet if the EF-1 twister strengthened into an EF-2, or if the possible EF-2 was a separate tornado).

Gov. Andy Beshear said the tornado caused severe damage in Trimble County.

“It does appear that there is some really significant damage, especially in the town of Milton in Trimble County,” Beshear said. “We are going to work to do everything we can to help those impacted, and we think there are over 100 structures that are potentially damaged.”

Carrollton Mayor Robb Adams said in a Facebook post that he believes a tornado touched down in west Carrollton at approximately 2:30 p.m., after the twister left Milton.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said traffic was moving slowly Thursday afternoon on I-71 between mile markers 62 and 65, near Glencoe, because the roadway was covered in hail. Additionally, Hwy 36 in Carroll County was shut down due to trees and power lines on the road.

Officials also report a tornado may have touched down in Gallatin County.

Currently, thousands of residents in the impacted counties are without power.

Two Indiana cities, Hanover and Madison, suffered severe damage as the tornado roared through the region prior to crossing the Ohio River into Kentucky.

As of yet (6:55 p.m.), no injuries or deaths have been reported.
