There’s been a break-in at the Leitchfield Animal Shelter.

The Leitchfield Police Department on Tuesday morning at 7:30 was notified of a break-in at the shelter, at 213 William Thomason Byway. When officers arrived, they discovered someone had broken into the shelter and let several the dogs loose, Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow said.

Multiple dogs suffered superficial injuries and are being treated at the shelter. One dog was found deceased, Renfrow said. Officials believe the dog may have been killed by another of the released dogs.

Two dogs remain unaccounted for. It’s unclear at this point how many dogs were let out of the shelter.

The shelter, which is currently closed, should reopen no later than the end of this week, Renfrow said.

Leitchfield police are currently reviewing video surveillance as part of the department’s active investigation. Renfrow said additional information should be released on Wednesday.

(Note: The story has been corrected to say that “several dogs” were let loose, instead of “all dogs” were let loose.)
