A rooster “commandeered” a traffic stop by a Leitchfield Police Department supervisor on Monday.

On Monday afternoon at approximately 4:00, LPD Sgt. Keith Harrell was driving home following his shift when he observed a pickup truck commit a traffic violation, Harrell told K105. He conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of South Main Street in the parking lot of Las Palmas Mexican Grill (adjacent to KFC).

Harrell made contact with the male driver, got his pertinent information, and returned to his cruiser to run the man’s info. As Harrell did this, a large rooster jumped on top of the cab of the truck and announced he was in charge (announced by way of dancing and generally causing a commotion on top of the truck).

Upon Harrell returning to the truck after running the driver’s info, the driver, who was quite suspicious of the rooster, would only roll his window down about an inch or two to interact with Harrell, as he apparently isn’t fond of uncooked chicken and, understandably, did not want the rooster inside the cab of his truck.

The rooster was joined by another rooster toward the end of the stop. One of the roosters, Harrell said, followed the sergeant back to his cruiser. It’s unclear if words were exchanged.

Harrell let the driver go with a warning, which was reportedly met with approval from the roosters who offered no further admonitions to the driver.

And so it goes in small town Kentucky.
