A man is facing several felony charges after crashing and injuring a pregnant woman while he was talking on a cellphone.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root said deputies were dispatched to an accident on I-75 about eight miles south of London Sunday night at approximately 8:40.

Upon arriving at the scene, “deputies conducted an investigation and learned that allegedly a vehicle had ran (sic) out of fuel and that a male subject in the vehicle had attempted to exit the vehicle to push the car,” Root said. Apparently, as the man exited the vehicle, a Honda struck the stalled vehicle in the rear.

The driver of the Honda, 49-year-old Johnathon Brantley, of Brooksville, Florida, told police he was “on his phone and when he looked up, he hit the car in the rear,” according to Root.

The vehicle that was struck contained a woman who was six months pregnant. She was airlifted from the scene, Root said.

Brantley was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, two counts of felony wanton endangerment and driving a motor vehicle using a hand-held mobile telephone. He was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
