Man convicted in Edmonson Co. for dealing meth, manufacturing meth, sent to federal prison after trafficking over 5 lbs of meth

A man twice convicted in Edmonson County on meth trafficking and meth manufacturing charges has been sentenced to federal prison following his conviction for trafficking over five pounds of methamphetamine.

Steven J. Phelps, 41, of Bowling Green, was sentenced on Monday to 15 years in federal prison, according to Michael A. Bennett, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents, Phelps, in August 2022, possessed with the intent to distribute 2,433 (5.4 pounds ounces) grams of methamphetamine and provided 8.7 grams of methamphetamine to another person for resale. On that same day, Phelps also possessed a 9mm handgun, prosecutors said.

He was prohibited from possessing a firearm because he had previously been convicted of the following felony offenses:

  • On April 24, 2015, in Edmonson Circuit Court, Phelps was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
  • On August 15, 2011, in Edmonson Circuit Court, Phelps was convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine.
  • On November 15, 2004, in Warren Circuit Court, Phelps was convicted of possession of a controlled substance.

The case was investigated by the ATF Bowling Green Field Office and the Bowling Green – Warren County Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Drug Task Force.
