A Clarkson felon is facing multiple felony charges after violating a domestic violence order (DVO) and firing a gun at two people.
Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins, Chief Deputy Sonny Poteet and Sgt. Jason Luedke were dispatched Monday morning at 9:00 to the 4500 block of Peonia Road “regarding a shooting that had just occurred,” according to the arrest citation.
While traveling south on Anneta Road, Chaffins passed the suspect, 25-year-old Wyatt J. Smithson, as Smithson drove north in the 4700 block of Anneta Road. Luedke, who was near Chaffins when the sheriff spotted the suspect, turned his cruiser around and conducted a traffic stop on Smithson in the Bear Creek area of Anneta Road.
Smithson was immediately detained and charged with violating a DVO.
The ensuing investigation into the shooting revealed Smithson arrived at the Peonia Road residence “and obtained an AR-15 style rifle and pointed (at) or in the direction of a vehicle occupied” by two people “and fired at least two rounds,” the citation states.
In addition to the DVO violation, Smithson was charged with two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, both class D felonies, and lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
Smithson, according to the Kentucky Department for Corrections, has previous felony convictions in Grayson County for trafficking in a controlled substance (LSD) and trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.
He is on probation until May 2026.
