A man brandishing a knife and machete has been shot and killed during a domestic disturbance.

Kentucky State Police said that on Sunday morning at approximately 9:50, troopers responded to the shooting on Little Creek Road in Rockcastle County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 48-year-old Joseph A. Dawson, of Berea, was involved in an ongoing verbal altercation with his wife, Katherine Dawson, and her family member, Phillip Fox.

Joseph Dawson was inside his wife’s residence making threats to kill her and Fox, state police said.

Joseph Dawson then exited the residence armed with a kitchen knife and a machete. Phillip Fox retrieved a firearm and fatally shot Joseph Dawson, according to Kentucky State Police. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Rockcastle County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the state Medical Examiner’s Office.

This case will be presented to the Rockcastle County Grand Jury for its consideration.
