Dozens of dead dogs have been dumped in Daniel Boone National Forest.

The dead animals have been found on a hill off Andy Watson Road in McCreary County, and in other areas in the federally managed land. Based on witnesses who spoke with WKYT Investigates, residents first noticed dead dogs being dumped in the forest during the summer.

The dogs have been found in different states of decomposition. Some of the animals have been found in garbage bags; some have been found with collars on.

A trail camera on December 20 recorded images of a truck carrying dead dogs to a dump location and returning without the dead dogs in the bed of the truck.

Kentucky State Police and the U.S. Forestry Service are leading the investigation.
