A man has been arrested after stealing a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet vehicle and driving the vehicle to the Adair County Jail.

The Columbia Police Department said officers responded to the jail Monday night at 9:30 after receiving a report of a suspicious male in a truck. Upon police arriving at the scene, officers encountered 48-year-old Joseph M. Shafer, of Gradyville (Adair Co.), and determined the suspect was under the influence of a substance.

Through an investigation, police found that Shafer stole the vehicle from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet office on Campbellsville Street and drove through a locked gate, causing damage to the front end of the truck and destroying the gate.

Shafer then drove to the jail.

He was arrested and charged with first-degree theft by unlawful taking (automobile), first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal trespassing, and public intoxication (excludes alcohol).
