A man has escaped from the Hardin County Detention Center.

Hardin County Jailer Josh Lindblom told WDRB.com that Tony Stephens likely stole keys at the facility’s minimum security substance abuse program Sunday night. He unlocked a door and walked out of the facility before apparently stealing an unmarked Hardin County Detention Center vehicle.

According to online records, Stephens, 36, was jailed on September 27, 2023, when he was charged with possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified) and theft by unlawful taking (more than $1,000, less than $10,000).

The escapee is from Covington.

Stephens was noted as missing during a head count. Officials noticed the jail vehicle was missing Monday morning.

Anyone with information on Stephens’ location is asked to call 911.
