A northern Kentucky sheriff is accused of driving drunk in his marked cruiser after registering a blood alcohol level more than double the limit allowed to drive.
Kentucky State Police was contacted Wednesday afternoon at about 2:00 regarding a “disagreement” involving a Robertson County Schools resource officer and Robertson County Sheriff Terry Gray, as the resource officer told troopers that Gray, who was driving his marked cruiser, “smelled of alcoholic beverages,” according to WKYT.com.
A trooper contacted Gray, who left the school, by cellphone and said the sheriff displayed slowed and slurred speech. Gray told the trooper he was traveling on Hwy 165 toward Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park.
Soon after, another trooper called Gray and also said the sheriff had slurred speech. Gray, according to the trooper, had made it to his residence in Mt. Olivet.
Troopers then traveled to Gray’s home and found him outside, next to his cruiser, where Gray told the troopers that he had consumed vodka earlier in the day. He was given a preliminary breath test which showed his blood alcohol content at .206. The legal limit to drive in Kentucky is .08
Gray was arrested and charged with DUI. He was initially taken to the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office before being transported to the Bourbon County Detention Center.
Gray first became sheriff in October 2021 after Mark Sutton resigned the post. He previously served for many years as a park ranger at Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park.
