A rookie Leitchfield Police Department officer has won the agency’s award for the most impaired driving arrests in 2023.

Ty Whitaker, who graduated from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training’s Basic Training Academy in December 2022, won LPD’s 2023 Impaired Driving Enforcement award, the agency announced on Thursday. Whitaker, who recorded 15 impaired driving arrests, was presented the award by LPD Sgt. Keith Harrell.

Additionally, the rookie made countless felony arrests during his first year with LPD.

Whitaker is a 25-year-old resident of Grayson County and Grayson County High School graduate. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Management after graduating from GCHS.

He served as a Grayson County Detention Center Deputy Jailer from 2020-2022, where he was a member of the Special Response Team.

Whitaker said he was inspired to enter law enforcement by his late grandfather, Bob Whitaker, a retired KSP Water Patrol Officer.
