Two communities in Rockcastle County have been evacuated following a train derailment.

On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 2:30, a CSX train carrying molten sulfur and other substances derailed near Livingston in Rockcastle County. Some of the load was spilled leading to a large fire at the accident site.

When molten sulfur burns, it releases sulfur dioxide, CSX officials said, a colorless gas with a strong odor. Exposure to the gas can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat.

Two communities, Livingston and Piney Branch, were evacuated. Some of the evacuees were transported to Rockcastle Middle School.

The fire was extinguished sometime Thursday morning, but residents continue to be kept away from the area. CSX says it is providing a Thanksgiving meal for evacuated residents at First Christian Church in Mount Vernon.

One member of the crew was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

There’s no word yet on why 15 of the 40-car train derailed.

On Wednesday night, Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency, activating additional resources as needed, including the Kentucky National Guard and Kentucky Emergency Management.
