A Hopkins County firefighter has died after being hit by a car.

Manitou Fire Department fireman, 44-year-old David Berry, of Nebo, was walking Monday night at approximately 5:10 on Manitou Road near the fire department when he was struck by a vehicle, WEVV.com reports.

The driver told police the rain and darkness combined to make it difficult to see. And by the time the driver noticed Berry walking it was too late to avoid hitting him.

Berry was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Manitou Fire Department Chief Michael Walker released the following statement on social media:

This is by far one of the hardest things I have ever had to type. Last night we lost a brother and a friend, Firefighter David Berry was killed in a terrible accident. David was the kind of person who would drop what he was doing and help anyone.

He was an outstanding firefighter and member with our department. If he wasn’t working or with family and the tones dropped he was there to help. I myself have lost a great friend.

The dept lost a great friend and the community lost a great friend. Please keep his family and friends as well as our department in your thoughts and prayers.

David we all love and miss you.

Berry’s death marks the third Kentucky firefighter killed in less than four weeks.

In late October, Regina M. Huffman, 39, a lieutenant with the Coon Creek Fire & Rescue in Leslie County, died in a vehicular accident while en route to set up a landing zone for a medical helicopter following an ATV accident.

On Saturday night, November 11, Ballardsville Fire and Rescue (Oldham Co.) Sgt. Tom Petschke Jr., 53, suffered a fatal heart attack while fighting a fire that spread from an abandoned structure to a wooded area. Federal, state and local authorities are investigating the suspicious blaze.
