A southern Kentucky police chief is being hailed a hero after pulling a woman out of a burning home.

On Monday, Hopkinsville Police Chief Jason Newby responded to a structure fire on East 4th Street, according to media outlets. As the first on the scene, Newby asked neighbors if anyone was inside. They told him they thought a woman was still inside the home.

Newby attempted to enter the structure through the front door but the heat, flames and smoke forced him out of the house. He then tried to find another way inside and made contact with the woman at a window on the side of the residence.

Newby asked the woman if she could crawl out, but she responded that she couldn’t. He then reached into the window and pulled the woman out of the home.

She was transported to Jennie Stuart Health hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation into the blaze revealed the fire was intentionally set. The Hopkinsville Police Department is leading the arson investigation.
