The most ghostly of holidays is upon us and the Leitchfield Police Department is offering tips for parents and children as trick-or-treating commences on Tuesday.

“In light of the upcoming Halloween events, the Leitchfield Police Department would like wish everyone and very safe and enjoyable night with your children,” Leitchfield PD Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow said. “With the increased foot traffic and heavier vehicle traffic in town, safety is the utmost priority for our children.”

The Leitchfield Police Department would like to recommend the following tips to ensure a safe and memorable night for all the little ones participating in the festivities:

  • Since Halloween costumes are typically dark, have your child wear a reflective wristband or glowstick necklace or bracelet to make them more visible to other pedestrians and motorists
  • Walk in well lit areas
  • Stay on the sidewalks and use crosswalks when crossing the street
  • Cross the street with a group of people, if possible, to improve visibility for motorists
  • Walk in areas you are most familiar with
  • Motorists use extra caution as you travel through town and allow yourself extra time to navigate the traffic congestion and get to your destination
  • Be patient with families, especially small children

In addition, and just as important as the above tips, Leitchfield police encourage parents to talk with older children about distractions such as their cell phones or ear buds as they may hinder children from noticing vehicles or other dangerous situations.

Homeowners make sure there is a clear path to your door for trick-or-treaters, free from trip hazards.

Pets can also create hazards for children, and LPD notes that dog bites are one of the most common Halloween-related injuries.

“Pet owners put dogs up or restrain them in some way, so they are not frightened by the ghosts and goblins walking around,” Renfrow stated.
