A Marion County Detention Center inmate has escaped through the roof of the facility.

Derrick E. Simmons, 43, of Louisville, was discovered missing by jail staff at approximately 11:30 Wednesday night.

Simmons was cleaning a multipurpose, secure recreation area when he stacked chairs and climbed the chairs to the fenced ceiling, the detention center said. He then pried open the fence and gained access to the roof.

Simmons was wearing blue Dickie pants and a white t-shirt over a light gray thermal shirt. He had on black shoes with white stripes.

The escapee is a state inmate participating in a substance abuse program at the jail. He was incarcerated at the facility on September 12, 2023.

He was convicted on two counts of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and receiving stolen property. One of the convictions took place in Jefferson County while two of Simmons’ convictions took place in Hardin County, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections.
