A second-grade student has been struck by a school bus in Jefferson County.

The eight-year-old boy was hit Monday morning at approximately 8:15 at the intersection of Fegenbush Lane and Hollow Creek Road near Luhr Elementary School in the Spring Mill area of Louisville.

The Louisville Metro Police Department told news outlets that the boy suffered “very serious” injuries when he was hit by the bus while crossing the street. The bus was not carrying students at the time of the accident.

The injured child was with his father and a sibling when the boy “darted in front of the school bus” that was traveling south on Fegenbush Lane, police told WDRB.com.

The child was transported to Norton Children’s Hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The traffic control officer who normally works at the intersection was on bereavement leave. Police said there are currently 76 traffic control officers assigned to school crossings in Jefferson County, 36 short of the 112 available positions.

The investigation is ongoing.
