An inmate has died after being found unresponsive at the Whitley County Detention Center.
Kyle A. Barton, 40, of Corbin, was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday. He was transported to Baptist Health Corbin before being airlifted to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.
Whitley County Jailer Jason Wilson told the News Journal that he received a call from his staff saying that Barton had been injured. Wilson did not elaborate on the type of injury Barton is alleged to have suffered from.
The Whitley County Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigation. Authorities are awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports.
Barton was arrested on September 14, 2023, and charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, theft by deception (cold checks) and a parole violation. He was also served with a failure to appear warrant.
According to online records, Barton has been arrested over 20 times since 2010 on a variety of charges, including multiple heroin possession counts, DUI, driving on a DUI suspended license, several traffic-related offenses, and court-ordered warrants for failure to appear and probation violations.
