Massive commercial fire in Bremen kills 100,000 chickens

A massive fire near Bremen resulted in fire departments from at least four counties responding.

Sunday morning at approximately 1:20, the Greenville Fire Department requested assistance from fire departments in Ohio, Hopkins, McLean, and Muhlenberg counties in battling a “commercial structure fire” at Cal-Maine Foods in the 1800 block of Hwy 2584 near Bremen.

Cal-Maine Foods is an egg production and distribution facility.

Upon arriving at the scene, fire crews “located a large industrial facility with heavy fire showing. Crews also noted possible extension to immediate exposures surrounding this facility,” according to the Greenville Fire Department.

Firefighters battled the two-story fire until early Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 100,000 chickens were killed in the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
