A former Columbia police chief has been sentenced to federal prison for stealing funds from the police department.
Jason D. Cross, 46, was sentenced to five months in federal prison for stealing over $25,000 from the Columbia Police Department, according to Michael A. Bennett, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.
According to court documents, between February 2020 and February 2021, Cross stole over $25,000 from the department’s evidence room and drug purchase fund, Bennett said.
After serving his prison term, he will be on supervised release for one year.
There is no parole in the federal system.
The case was investigated by Kentucky State Police and the Columbia Police Department.
Columbia is a town of approximately 5,000 residents in Adair County.
