Over the weekend, Leitchfield joined a host of cities from around the world that have experienced mysterious black circles in the sky.
Social media was abuzz Saturday night after a circle was photographed by several residents in the skies above the Lilac Road/Sunbeam Road area Saturday night just before dusk.
Opinions on what the unexplained phenomenon could be varied greatly and included theories expounding mostly about the circle being birds or smoke.
One witness said the circle remained intact for several minutes then suddenly disappeared.
A quick Google searched revealed countless articles from around the world detailing, with photographs and/or videos, the appearance of unidentified black rings in the sky.
Here are a few (click on the links to read the full articles):
This article, from IndiaTimes.com, reports on a circle appearing above Moscow, Russia, in March of this year. The articles states: “According to locals, there was a loud bang before they saw the ring rising steadily in the sky.”
The article also notes another incident when a similar black circle was seen over Warwick Castle in Warwick, England, in 2014.
KUTV.com in Salt Lake City, Utah, describes a black ring rising into the sky during a Supercross event in that city in April 2021. The article says in part: “That person sent us a photo of the smoke ring above Rice-Eccles Stadium as well as this video showing the flamethrower just before the smoke rings takes off.”
Much discussion ensued on social media, with one person saying on Reddit that the circle was caused by a “fire blast during the World of Color show at California Adventure.”
“I know this because I work there,” they said.
A witness to Saturday night’s black ring, who lives on Sunbeam Road, said she heard a loud bang that she thought was fireworks just before the circle appeared in the sky. Possibly indicating the circle was a ring of smoke borne from the firework.
