Five Grayson County teenagers survived a crash on Peonia Road despite two of the passengers riding in the bed of a truck and the three in the cab apparently not wearing seat belts.

Friday night at approximately 11:10, Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins, and Deputies Sean Fentress, Justin Cockerell and Thomas Lane, the Clarkson Fire Department, and EMS responded to the accident in the 2600 block of Peonia Road.

Police said 19-year-old Harmony Holmes was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck containing four passengers, with two — a 17-year-old male and 15-year-old female — riding in the bed of the vehicle. Based on marks at the scene, the truck was traveling east when Holmes lost control and briefly entered the westbound lane. The truck then reentered the eastbound lane and drove directly off the roadway.

The truck missed striking a culvert, apparently by inches, and struck an embankment head-on, flipping the vehicle onto its top. The two passengers riding in the bed of the truck were ejected.

Colton Haycraft, 19, and Jasmine Whobrey, 19, were riding in the cab of the truck.

Holmes suffered a serious injury and was transported by EMS to Baptist Health Hardin.

The other occupants of the truck suffered varying non-life-threatening injuries ranging from facial lacerations to a leg injury. All were transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center either by EMS or private means.

It appears, police said, that none of the passengers in the cab of the truck were wearing seat belts.

Authorities added that it appears alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Criminal charges are pending, according to police.
