The identities of the Ohio County deputy and suspect in the fatal deputy-involved shooting in Ohio County have been released.

The shooting occurred Monday night at approximately 7:00 in the 700 block of Dan Road near Horse Branch when deputies responded to a disturbance, Ohio County Sheriff Adam Wright told news outlets.

Upon police arriving at scene, including Kentucky State Police and the Beaver Dam and Hartford Police Departments, the suspect, 49-year-old David R. Sandefur Jr., of Horse Branch, brandished a shotgun and fled into the woods.

Law enforcement established a perimeter around Sandefur before a team of three deputies entered the wooded area. While searching for the suspect, he appeared and made contact with Deputy Kelsey Embry, state police said.

Sandefur failed to comply with several commands made by Embry to show his hands, which were hidden behind his back. The suspect, with his hands still behind his back, then charged at Embry, resulting in the deputy shooting the suspect multiple times.

Sandefur was transported to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Embry has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team investigates the shooting.
